Columbus! Something New 8.9.15
C!SN 8.9.15: Buckeye Bearder’s August Meet-up at Land Grant Brewing, the Columbus Food Truck Festival, the Ohio State Fair {Ralph Corriveau’s art & Schmidt’s creampuffs}, Carfagna’s Italian Kitchen, Homage, GLEAN Stuff Reawakened, and Juli Carvi introduces us to Louie’s Daybreak Diner.
Story:
This weekend was the last weekend of the Ohio State Fair, and there were some important things there for us to experience. First, we wanted to see Ralph Corriveau's photos on display at the Cox Fine Arts Building. Guidelines in the building forbid photography of the artwork, so I cannot show you his photos. However you can check out Ralph on facebook and on his website! Next, I needed a Schmidt's creampuff. Food should not equate happiness, but I am nothing but happy eating a creampuff from Schmidt's! Every day I want one. Thirdly, the one fair ride we all agree on is the Sky-Glider sky ride. This half-mile peaceful trek across the fairgrounds is a super way to get a new view of the fair. Fourth stop, the Bricker Building. Here is where you will find many things to buy, along with a variety of departments from the State of Ohio providing information for a variety of things: setting up a business, road safety, health and wellness, jobs, etc... Finally, we like to walk through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources display. Relaxing and full of shade, this is a peaceful place to see butterflies, wildflowers, and to check out the water activities.
After the fair, we traveled north on 71 to eat at Carfagna's Italian Kitchen, located on 2025 Polaris Parkway. While this is the first time we have ate at the restaurant, Burke is a regular shopper at Carfagna's Market for their meat department. If you are a meat eater, Carfagna's Market is definitely a place you want to check out! Carfagna's Italian Kitchen offers the same high level of customer service along with freshly prepared food. Burke ordered marinated and grilled wings, Carrigan ordered a bowl of soup, and I ordered two vegetable sides. The food was incredible, we were full, however not full enough to say no to a piece of multi-layer chocolate cake and a cannoli! It was great to talk with Terri and learn more about Carfagna's Italian Kitchen. It had started much smaller, but needed to be expanded to include a large dining room. We had a wonderful time, the service was fantastic, and the food was just what we needed! So next time you find yourself in the Polaris area, drive east of 71 to Carfagna's Italian Kitchen and support local!
Sunday was a fun day. Burke and I headed to the Short North to check out Homage and GLEAN Stuff Reawakened. Homage is a great place for soft t-shirts with a vintage feel. All along, I thought they were reaching out to those of us of a certain age, and now I realize the 80s are vintage. [Dramatic pause] Burke found a Jody Shelley t-shirt he is now the proud owner of! A little north of Homage is the shop, GLEAN Stuff Reawakened, of our buddy, Dawn. It is always good to see her and browse through all the reawakened treasures the artisans create! I do not think we ever leave without purchasing at least one bar of her homemade soap, and this time was no exception. She has crafted soaps from local breweries and distilleries. Burke found a soap crafted from Watershed Distillery's bourbon! I hope you head to the Short North for an afternoon or evening of fun. When you do, be sure to spend some time at Homage and GLEAN!
